A customizable EV wall charger, designed together with RAAK. For the driveway at home as well as the car park at work.
A charger has to do more than charge. It has to go up quickly, get through every season outdoors and still look right on the wall it hangs on.
The project started from a clear set of technical and functional constraints, drawn up with RAAK. Within them we focused on three things: ease of installation, modular customizability and robust waterproofing.
Axis gathers everything in one rounded housing: the charging socket with its flip lid, a card reader and a single line of light that shows the charging status. Whether it hangs horizontally or vertically is decided by the middle plate. Turn the design of that plate, and the same charger follows the wall, the door frame or the column it is mounted on. Hence the name.
Installation shaped the build. A steel wall plate goes up first with four screws, the housing hooks onto it and the cable runs out at the back. Every joint between the layers, from front plate to housing, has its own seal, so the charger stays watertight in rain, frost and full sun.
The middle plate is where the charger becomes yours. In RAAK black it disappears into the facade of a home; in a translucent colour carrying a logo, it becomes part of a brand, on a terrace, in a showroom or in a company car park.
A process in which engineering, usability and visual identity were worked out side by side, in close collaboration with the team at RAAK.
