Rack
A 20-hour design study: the kapstok, or coat rack, rethought from a product designer’s point of view.
Coming home means dropping everything at once: bag, laptop, raincoat, keys, with hands full and nowhere to put anything down.
The study started from one user: a lawyer who leaves at 8 and is home between 6 and 7, who wants to lose everything in one go, and would rather pay more once than replace things later. What she needs is a place to make the switch from outside to inside, not just somewhere to hang a jacket.
Rack is the answer: a wall-mounted panel with horizontal slots. Aluminium elements slide in where needed. A hook here, a shelf there, a seat below.
One grooved maple panel, eight smaller ones, and a set of aluminium french cleats to mount it on any flat surface. The elements slide into the grooves without screws or fixings, so the layout is always yours to change: hooks you can throw a jacket over, a shelf, a shoe rack, a placemat for wallet and keys, and a seat for tying your shoes.
The maple is cut on a table saw and the grooves are routed in a single CNC pass. The aluminium is cut, press-braked and powder-coated; the wood gets a hand-applied wax for a soft matte surface. Rack comes in five tones: terracotta, sky blue, mustard yellow, white and charcoal.
