Sotto
A low table and floor chair set that brings the Japanese habit of sitting close to the ground into the European home.
In the European home, everything happens above the floor: we work at desks, eat at tall tables and sink into deep sofas.
Sotto asks for a small change, sitting about thirty centimetres lower. Designed with HNDI in Tokyo, the studio of Hiraoki Nishimura, it takes the calm of low living and adapts it for the west.
The brief was clear: easy to assemble and store away, a table height that works with both sofa and low chair, enough backrest, stable on hard floors and rugs, and made from local, natural materials.
A low table in solid European oak and a floor chair in vegetable-tanned Italian leather. The table measures 1200 by 600 mm and is 350 mm high; the chair is 700 mm wide and 850 mm high.
Lathe, CNC, leather cutter and handwork, all in one Flemish workshop. The legs screw in, so the set comes apart and is easy to store.
